A SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY FOR 2008/5769

High Holiday Prayer Books (Machzorim)
A bookplate with your name and the name of the person you wish to honor or remember
will be placed in each book you sponsor.
Students attending our Conservative services for the High Holidays are using outdated prayer books with antiquated translations. Current editions of books are needed to create a more welcoming atmosphere for students, especially since the new books are more familiar to students from their home congregations.

ENGAGING NEW STUDENTS

FYSH: First Year Students of Hillel
$1,000 per year
FYSH helps more than 300 new students adjust to campus and college life through multiple Welcome-to-UA events, especially during the first six weeks on campus. This group is directed by students in order to create exciting opportunities to meet other Jewish students.

 Intramurals
$1,000 per year
Over 100 students play on co-ed basketball, football, soccer, volleyball and ultimate Frisbee teams. Equipment and team jerseys are needed to ensure that Hillel’s teams are ready for the field.

STRENGTHENING JEWISH LEADERS

 Student Leadership Retreat
This project has been funded for 2008 ny the Brynna Zehngut Community Fund at the Jewish Community Foundation of Southern Arizona.
This annual get-away provides the next generation of Jewish leaders an extraordinary opportunity to further develop their leadership skills in a non-threatening environment and learn how to use their authority to further Jewish values.

Alternative Spring Break 2009
This project has been funded by a grant from the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona.
The devastation that ravaged the Gulf Coast as a result of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 is still evident. Since 2006, the UA Hillel has sent a group of 26 students to this region during Spring Break with the sole purpose of re-building homes that were destroyed by the floods.

 Graduate Programming
$1,250 per year / $625 per semester
Hillel serves approximately 500 Jewish graduate students on campus. Programming opportunities for students seeking graduate degrees in general studies, law and medicine are in place, allowing us reach beyond undergraduates.

24 Hour Holocaust Vigil
$50 per hour
Each year, students plan a community-wide event that pays tribute to the 11 million people killed during World War II as a result of genocide. In the past, the 24 hour Vigil has included: reading the names of those who perished, educating the public about the current genocide in Darfur, information regarding UA’s DNA Shoah project, speakers from the Arizona Center for Judaic Studies, a museum, a children’s memorial, etc. Sponsor one hour of the vigil with your donation. This opportunity is limited to 24 1-hour donations.

 ISRAEL EXCELLENCE

 Israel Fellow
$6,000 per year
This full-time position received a partial grant from the Jewish Agency, Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona & International Hillel for 2008/09.
As an Israel advocate and educator, the Israel Fellow provides an up-close-and-personal connection to Israel and its culture.

 Café Ivrit (Hebrew Café) weekly
$200 per year
Support opportunities for any student to engage in conversational Hebrew in an informal setting with our Israel Fellow.

Israel Week
$4,800 per year
Tents on the UA Mall house Israeli music, art, food and more as part of our week-long celebration of Israel.  The entire Tucson community is welcome here to learn more about the country we call our own.

Israeli Film Festival at Gallagher
$250 (part of Israel Week)
A current film with an Israel connection is shown on the big screen at Gallagher for the campus and local communities.

Guest Speaker
$750 (part of Israel Week)
Sponsor a speaker on the UA Mall as part of our community-wide, week-long celebration of Israel.

SHABBAT & HOLIDAYS AT HILLEL

Shabbat Uncensored
$250 per week to replenish supplies of Challah and juice
Wherever they may be, students can celebrate Shabbat each week thanks to Shabbat Uncensored. Students are given a carry-all bag that contains grape juice and wine glass, challah cover and challah, candles and matches. Friday mornings provide an opportunity to replenish the supply of juice, challah, and candles.

 Friday Night Shabbat at Hillel
This project has been subsidized by a gift from Ruth and Irving Olson for 2008/09.
Eight times each semester, Hillel welcomes Shabbat with services (student-led Orthodox, Conservative, Reform or an alternative discussion) followed by a kosher dinner. Students are charged a nominal fee that does not cover all of the expenses incurred.

Holiday Celebrations at Hillel
Hillel welcomes students for the Jewish holidays, creating meaningful and memorable experiences throughout the year. Donations subsidize the expense associated with the following holidays. Food provided by Hillel is kosher.

Rosh Hashanah Dinner - $800
Yom Kippur Break-the-Fast - $800
Sukkot $200
Chanukah - $400
Tu B’Shvat - $150
Purim - $ TBD
Passover (second night Seder) -  $100/5 students

STRENGTHENING INFRASTRUCTURE

 Hillel Technology – Marketing
$10,000 per year
In order to facilitate communication with students, parents, faculty and alumni, Hillel must maintain a sophisticated marketing effort. This initiative supports the continuing development and maintenance of wireless communications, laptops, high end website and other state of the art communication tools that allow us to inform and attract Jewish students.

RENAISSANCE CIRCLE
$5,000 per year
Provide financial support to continue our award-winning programming. These funds enable us to expand our staff and engage more of the 3,500 Jewish students on campus
